State Reports

Dear students,

America is an amazing place. This country of ours is made up of 50 states that are very different in ways that may be surprising. For this project, you will be studying one of the 50 states in order to learn more about our country.
Some parts of the project will be done in class and some at home. You will be expected to bring any materials you have to class each day.

General Project Requirements:
• All work is to be done by the student.
No copying from books or the internet.
• All work must be in final draft (Pen and cursive or typed)
• Written report must follow outline.

The written report outline:

Introduction: Introduce your state by giving reason for choosing it, interesting information, what you like about it etc... (about 1/2 a page)

History: Discuss your state’s history from pre-settlers to current time. Be sure to include statehood. (1 page minimum)
*optional: timeline

Geography: Write about the different land features, rivers, cities. Include at l east two different types of maps. (ex. population, cities and roads) (1/2 page minimum)

Climate and weather: Discuss seasonal weather, rainfall, etc. (1/2 page)

Places of interest: Be sure to include national parks, amusement parks, sports, and anything else that a tourist or visitor would want to see.
(1 page minimum)

Natural resources: Include mining, fishing, and anything that people get from the land. (1/2 page)

Industry and Agriculture: This is what jobs there are and what products are made, grown, or raised. (1/2 page minimum) Include graphs or charts.

State Symbols: Include pictures and descriptions of several state symbols. Include why these were chosen if possible.

Conclusion: Review the highlights and items of special interest to you.

Bibliography: You need 3 sources or more. Include at least one book.

The oral report:

You will give an oral report to the class. Include interesting facts and information about your state. You may use note cards but you will not be allowed to read from your report. Be sure to practice with friends or family to work on voice and pacing. You should not try to memorize your whole report. Just tell us the “good stuff.”

Other features:

We will be designing covers for the projects. We will also be building a model that represents interesting features of each state. These will be done in class.
