English Language Arts (ELA):
We use our CUSD adopted Houghton Mifflin California Reading Series,
which helps to teach letter recognition, letter sounds, and beginning
words. The Wright Group “Sunshine” series is used for shared
and guided reading. Those children who are ready to read will be
involved in an independent reading program using Scholastic Phonics
Readers.
Mathematics: The math
series is Scott Foresman’s California Mathematics, which correlates
directly with California’s State Curriculum Standards. It uses a
mixture of hands-on manipulative use, skills practice, and problem
solving strategies. We also use MathLand (hands-on) activities and
Math Exemplars (problem solving).
Social Studies: Our
Social Studies program is published by Harcourt School Publishers. We study
Citizenship & Rules, Our Country & State Symbols, Community Workers, Maps & Safety Signs, Calendars & Months, Stories of the Past & American Holidays.
Science: Our science
program is based on the Houghton Mifflin Science, Discovery Works.
Our units of study include Looking up at the Earth and Sky, Body Parts,
Characteristics of Living Things, and Exploring with the Senses.
Physical Education (PE): Our
program emphasizes the instruction of basic skills like hopping,
skipping, jumping, running, kicking, throwing, and balance. The
children learn through practice and games.
Other: Field Trips:
To support our curriculum, our PFA enables us to go on several field
trips throughout the year. We usually visit Amy’s Farm, in
Chino, The California Science Center in Los Angeles, and The Los Angeles
Zoo. |
