It would be safe to say that Johann Sebastian Bach holds a place in music history comparable
to that of Aristotle in philosophy or Da Vinci in art. He was a member of an intensely musical
family and wrote in many musical forms. Like Vivaldi, his reputation as a composer languished
for many years after his death, until his "St. Matthew Passion" was rediscovered by Mendelssohn
in 1829. There are now 1,080 catalogued compositions, about 75% of them written for worship services.
As the father of twenty children, we can understand why he was called "Papa Bach", but that
