Our first fourth grade book report has arrived! All students must choose an appropriate grade level book to read over the next two weeks. Then they will write a one page handwritten summary about the book.
Project Guidelines:
Read a grade level appropriate book.
Write a one page handwritten summary about your book. Remember that when writing a summary you need to include the main idea, or what the story is about, and the most important details of the story. Basically you need to paraphrase the story by restating it. Make sure to use your own words, without changing the author’s meaning. Important details answer questions such as who? what? when? where? why? and how? about the main idea.
Give a Book Talk. Prepare to answer the following (in order) and to be discussed in 5 minutes during the talk:
- title and author of the book
- setting: place/time
- characters
- point of view/who’s telling the story
- plot/problem of the story
- how problem is resolved
- favorite parts of the story
- rating and why
Although there is much to be discussed during a short time, this is a very fun activity. All children will be successful!!!
Grading: The report will be graded on a rubric of 1-4 (same as report card) with a 3 being on grade level. The expectations are that Students write clear, coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea. Their writing shows that they consider the audience and the purpose. Students write and speak with a command of standard English conventions appropriate to this grade level.
