California State Flag The Golden State Project

Making a Travel Brochure

Dear Parents and Students,

In class we are exploring California 's regions, culture, traditions and scenic wonders. Attached please find the directions and guidelines for the Golden State Project.

Keep in mind that this is the first of many reports your child will write during his/her school years. Your support and encouragement of this project will pay off in the future with greater independence and competence on your child's part. Since this is a first project, I am more interested in the process than in its length. The final project should be a reflection of your child's effort and understanding.

Project Guidelines:

1. Choose an area of California to research. It can be as general as a region or specific as a city, national park, attraction or scenic wonder. Some examples include: the desert, the ocean, the central valley, the mountains, Los Angeles, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Big Sur, Palm Springs, Mono Lake, Mount Shasta, Hearst Castle, San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, Grauman's Chinese Theater, Hollywood, San Diego, Palm Springs, Death Valley National Park, etc. Your area of California should be chosen by Friday, October 8 th .

2. Begin reading and taking notes as you find out information. You may use books and/or the Internet to find information. Note interesting historical information, fun things to do in that area, the climate of the area, important landmarks, etc. Some good California Internet sites are:

travelcalifornia.com

findyourselfincalifornia.com

gocalif.ca.gov

ca.gov

3.Use your notes to create a travel brochure about your area. Be sure to use your own words to help create interest in attracting others to your area. Be creative! One way to create a brochure is to fold large sheets of construction paper into three or four panels. Panels can then be sectioned to include maps, pictures, famous landmarks, special interest items, information about special events, and so forth. Make sure you have an adult help you edit for correct sentence use, spelling and punctuation. You may write or have an adult help you type your information. All brochures must include information about what you learned. Reports will be graded for neatness, content and effort . Your final project is due Friday, October 29 th . Also be prepared to give an informal oral report to explain your project to the class.

Although this project is a homework assignment, I will be more than happy to assist in any way. If you should need help in finding resources please let me know as soon as possible. The most important item to remember: START EARLY!!! Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this project.

Sincerely,

Loretta Wolfinbarger
