Newbery Honor sealNewbery Award Book Report

Our next project is a Newbery Award book report. This report will be formatted in a different manner than what we’ve done in the past. Students must read a Newbery Award winning book and create personal journal entries about their thoughts and experiences on four sections of the book. Although a list of some interesting fourth grade titles are attached, students may select any Newbery book of their choice (a comprehensive list is on the website at www.ala.org/ala/alsc/awardsscholarships/literaryawds/newberymedal). Students may write their journal entries during class time (Silent Reading period) or at home.

Project Guidelines:

  • Select your Newbery book by Wednesday, February 4th.
  • Start reading the book. Journal the first section of your book (due Wednesday, February 11th). Use the formatted page attached. Remember to first summarize what you’ve read and then reflect on your reading. A journal is a tool for learning, thinking, and self-expression. When writing messages you may think about what you have learned, connect new information to what you already know, and express your own thoughts and feelings about topics. What you write about is up to you!!! Although there is no minimum requirement for how much information needs to be provided for each journal entry, it is expected for students to demonstrate how much they have learned from the book they read for the month
  • Continue reading the book and journal again (due Wed., February 18th).
  • Continue reading the book and journal again (due Wed., February 25th).
  • Continue reading the book and journal for the last time (due Wed., March 4th).
  • Create a final book project and share with the class (due Friday, March 6th). This project is reflective of your interests and/or creativity. You may select anything to do that shows me what you’ve learned or gained from the book. Ideas are endless! It may be something you turn in or something you show the class.
  • Take an AR test on your book.

Remember to start early and let me know if you need any assistance.
