Ziggurats

  • Ziggurats were like a temple.
  • Almost every city-state had a ziggurat.
  • They were usually made from bricks of mud.
  • They were they center of every city-state.
  • Usually, a ziggurat was used to worship the god that was unique to that city-state.
  • Ziggurats were very large.

  • Families in Mesopotamia used the natural resources around them to build their homes.
  • Upper class families had two-story homes.
  • Middle class families had one-story houses.
  • Lower class families had small shack like structures.
  • Permanent homes were a huge advantage because Mesopotamians could store heavy tools in their homes.

 

Achivements of Mesopotamia

  • The world’s first ever ziggurats.
  • The most amazing thing they created was a way of writing, if they hadn’t created writing I probably wouldn’t be able to write what I’m writing right now!

  • There as wall around every city-state.
  • There was three main parts to the city-state(s).
  • The rich or worked with the ziggurat, live in two story homes
  • The less important people lived in one story homes.
  • Slaves worked for the rich people who lived in two story homes.

 

 

Daily Life

  • Daily Life in Mesopotamia mostly consisted of work.
  • There were a lot of jobs to be done.
  • Mesopotamians wore elaborate clothing.
  • Mesopotamians loved to eat!
  • The Mesopotamians staple foods were barley and wheat, but they liked meat the most.
  • They ate many different kinds of meat, such as beef, pork, duck, chicken, and lamb.

Fun and Games

  • Mesopotamians didn’t work all of the time.
  • They sometimes played games.
  • A variety of different games were played, such as boxing, wrestling, polo, and backgammon.
  • Winning earned pride and respect from the other citizens.
  • The most played game was probably the game that was like backgammon that was played with a pair of dice.
  • It was called the “Royal Game of Ur.”

Religion

  • Each city-state had some sort of a religion they would give and make things for them such as……….
  • Pottery.
  • They gave them food and water.
  • Also the priest talked to the gods . The gods supposedly told them if there was a persom needed to be sacrificed or to have an exorcism.
  • If a priest suspected there was a demon in a person, the priest would perform an exorcism on that person.

               Inventions

  • The Mesopotamians made great inventions.
  •  Some of there great inventions are the Seeder Plow, the Chariot, the Sail, the Wheel, Irrigation, and Cuneiform.
  • The seeder plow was used for farming.
  • The chariot was for battle.
  • The sail was for long distance trade.
  • The wheel was for short distance (trade across land.)
  • Irrigation was when the summers were hot and dry, when the water didn’t get to the crops.
  • Cuneiform was used to keep track of records.

  • Cuneiform was very important in
    Early Mesopotamia.
  • The city-state ,Sumer, was the city-state that used cuneiform the most.
  • Scribes had jobs as writing everything down such as…..
  • How many crops grown in a day
  • Or keeping track of how many sheep breeded in a year.
  • Scribes studied cuneiform from ages 8 to 21

 

Ruling

  • Many of the city-states had a ruler such as in Babylon. Hammurabi was an early ruler of Babylon. He created an important law-code such as……
  • If someone was commiting a crime and was caught he/she would be put to death.
  • A lot of the city-states performed exorcism’s on anyone who ‘had a demon’ inside of them.
