CHAPARRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE SCHOOL

Dear Students and Parents:

We are pleased to announce that preliminary arrangements have been made to continue our participation in the Chaparral to the Ocean Science School. This is an exceptional education program. It provides students with an unique opportunity to explore science in ways that are not possible in the classroom and to develop social skills. This experience will be remembered as the highlight of the sixth grade for years to come.

Several elementary schools in Claremont now offer this type of program to students. This type of experience is considered a privilege for students, and attendance is based on an incentive program developed by individual schools. Many years ago, we felt a growing need to establish our own incentive program at Chaparral. Every sixth grade student has an equal opportunity to attend the science school. Our incentive program stipulates that attendance is based upon academic effort and social behaviors in and out of the classroom. The following information will outline our program and conditions for science school eligibility.

  • EACH STUDENT BEGINS WITH 1000 POINTS--
  • If a student drops below 700 points, he/she is placed on probation.
  • Opportunities are provided to earn points back.
  • PLAYGROUND BEHAVIOR TICKETS--
  • 50 points will be deducted for each ticket a student receives.
  • Points are NOT recoverable as we expect students to control their behavior during recess periods.
  • EFFORT--
  • 25 points will be deducted if a student receives an N in effort on the Progress Report cards.
  • These points can be earned back by getting an S at the next grading period.
  • WORK HABITS--
  • 5 points will be deducted for every missing assignment.
  • Absent work will be excluded, unless not turned in by the time stated.
  • Points are not recoverable.

We are confident that all students can maintain these standards and we appreciate your support.  Science School is scheduled for May 14th, 15th, and 16th,  2008.  You may wish to consider some type of incentive program at home whereby your child can earn all or part of the camp expense.

Sincerely the Sixth Grade Team,
