S.Q.R.T.

SUPER QUIET READING TIME

All students in my class will be responsible for keeping a “S.Q.R.T. Journal”.  Sixth graders are encouraged to read a minimum of 900 pages per trimester to receive a “4” on the rubric scale.  This will only be a part of their language arts grade.  Other assignments will also contribute to your child’s final reading grade on the report card.

I am asking for your support at home to encourage your child to read everyday.  Part of their homework time every night will be to read at least 15-20 minutes (Approximately 20 pages a night).  The students are responsible for recording the titles of the books, the AR level, and how many points it is worth.  This can be done when they finish the book.  They will be writing a brief summary of the book 8-10 sentences.  The students will be doing the writing and recording of information in the classroom. Students will not receive credit for the pages unless the title, number of pages, and a summary is written in the proper format.

I hope you will encourage your child to read as much as possible.  All book report assignments count toward S.Q.R.T. , as well as some special reading assignments, social studies and science assignments that may be given in class or for homework. Usually, fifteen to twenty minutes of classroom independent reading time is given daily.

GRADING SCALE FOR SIXTH GRADE:

( To include all work completed in reading journal according to grade level standards)

                          900+ PAGES  = 4                     600-899 PAGES    = 3

                                        300-599 = 2                     299 AND BELOW  = 1

Thank you for your support at home.  Reading is very important to your child’s education.
