Prokop's Press Sept. 5, 2008
Dear Parents and Students,
It has been great getting to know the students these last three days. I am really impressed by their behavior and attitudes. This is a wonderful class. I know we will have a great year with lots of fun learning going on. This is a very special year for them, as sooner than they realize, they will be headed to El Roble. We try to make their last year one with great memories, along with making sure they are prepared. I am excited to get the year under way.
I appreciate the time you spent Wednesday and Thursday night filling out the unending amount of forms that were sent home. PFA and the office thank you! We have spent these days trying to get to know each other, and learning the routines of room 16. On Wednesday Sept. 10th. at Back To School Night, I will be going over the curriculum, the particulars of sixth grade, and how I personally run my classroom. Mrs. Kern’s general session is at 6:45 p.m. in the MPR. We will meet in the classroom before that at 6:00 for my talk. Many of your questions should be answered then. I will have the November parent conference schedule, so bring your calendars if you would like to sign up early and get it out of the way. I look forward to seeing all of you.
This week we started with math and reading beginning of the year assessments, the class as a whole have been troopers! We have also begun our first literature unit, “Courage and Dreams” Several writing assignments have centered on these ideas, along with writing about our summer escapades.
Next week, we will begin both science and social studies. Our first unit in social studies is “Early Man.” Last year, we have a relatively new social studies book with many connections to the Internet throughout the book. We also have a new science book that also has many aspects accessed through the Internet. Because of this, I am including a note that needs to be filled out about Internet access at home. I need to know which students would be able to complete an assignment from home. Of course there would always be an alternate assignment if there is not access at home.
I now have both a document camera, and a projector in the classroom, in order to use these internet access sites with instruction in the classroom.
This red folder will come home weekly, as I will explain this Wednesday. Please send the folder back Monday morning with the correct box initialed. This will let me know that you have received my letter and have seen the papers in the folder. In the future, the only papers that get sent back are those that need to be filled out (if there are any), or a corrected paper that indicates that it needs to be signed or redone. The rest stay home with you. PFA papers will also be included with my classroom red folder, as they are not providing separate folders this year. This should make things easier for parents, as only having to keep track of one folder each week.
Because our Back To School Night is next week, I will wait to set up a parent volunteer schedule. The paper work will be passed out at that time. It will take a few days to organize and put together a schedule. I would like to have a draft done by Friday Sept. 12th. so the schedule can begin the following week if it works out for everyone. I always have jobs for parents, so if you would like to volunteer before the schedule comes out, I would love to have you. You can always come by the classroom after checking into the office, and I will definitely put you to work. It would be greatly appreciated. When you fill out the schedule, please be sure to indicate if your time is flexible, so I know how much leeway I have in placing everyone at a time that works best for our instruction.
Thanks to the students for a great start to a new year, and I look forward to seeing you on the 10th.
Sincerely, Mrs. Leanna Prokop
