Dear Parents and Students,
Happy March! We have been very busy as you know.
Math: Integers continue with the chapter 6 test next Tues. It is imperative that students have memorized the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers in order to have success on the test.
College Research: Students had the opportunity this week to work on the classroom computer to research either their college of interest, or for their report. College reporting is continuing, as students create their pennants and work on the flyers at the computer lab. They are doing a great job! I love the interest this project has sparked, and the seriousness students are taking about thinking about their future.
Social Studies: Students took the Greek unit test Wednesday. As the class had the essay questions given to them last week, many were very prepared for the test by preparing the answers ahead of time. GREAT JOB! Unfortunately, some students did not even take them home, or go over them previous to Tuesday night. You might want to talk to your child if you were the parent that did not even know they had the questions ahead of time. Lessons learned for some on planning ahead for success.
We began the beginning of our Egyptian studies, by the activity the class has been waiting for, the mummification of the chicken, "King Cluck." You will be able to see the first stage of this process at Open House. Next week we will begin the simulation game that is centered around the Egyptian studies.
Students will be put into Nome groups and do activities that will move their group up the Nile River. The first is the completion of the "Egyptian God" booklet, where they will become familiar with the ancient gods that were the center of the Egyptian's life.
Greek Fest: Thank you to all who helped make a great culmination activity for our studies of Greece. A fun time was had by all. We ate in style, some new flavors and types of food were discovered by many. Thank you again.
Ancient Civilization Report: Students are working hard and learning a great deal. For many there was a "bump" in the road on part "A". Instruction was given and should have been written down in class, on what needed to be included in the Brief History section. This was also done for the Farming and Irrigation section. Quite a few need to redo or add to their part "A". As a reminder, note cards need to be prepared and turned in for every section. Instructions were given in the packet as well as a full working lesson in class on how to complete note cards. Each card needs to have the source # on it as well as page numbers used. These cards are to be done in phrases and words, not complete sentences. The rough draft should be written solely from the note cards, not from the books or internet pages. On many of the rough drafts, I asked students what certain sentences that they had written meant, and they could not tell me. It is vital that the reports are written in their own words, not pieces copied from their sources. I know this report seems overwhelming for some, but helping your child stay on top of each section and those to come, helps it to be an easier process. Homework has been lightened to help them. Your child should be coming home nightly with his/her report folder. That way any instructions or note are with them when needed. Adversely, this folder should come back to school every day, in case time is given in class to work.
Little Buddies: Next week we will be working on a standard for social studies and that is map making. We will be creating a map for a "buried treasure" from the leprechauns for our little buddies. Shh it is a secret. Mrs. Corrette will be putting together little pots of buried treasure that we will bury in secret on St. Patrick's Day. We will then present our created maps for our buddies to find the treasure that we buried.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Prokop
