 Prokop's  Press  October 26, 2007

Dear Parents and Students,

It is hard to believe that October is almost over! Here is a view of what has been happening in class this week and what is to come.

RED RIBBON WEEK: This week we looked at leading a healthy life. Each day we wore a special item of clothing that represented a slogan for the statement of staying "Drug Free"

MATH: We continue with multiplication and division. We have worded on balancing equations with multiplication and division.

LANGUAGE ARTS: Last week we read two more stories with our Courage theme. The first took place at the time of WWII about a man who risked his life writing Visas for jewish families trying to get out of Germany. The second, about a family in a car crash and the children climb through the snow to get help. We also continued with Journey to Topaz and students learned how to write and answer higher level thinking inference questions. Something we will see a lot more of.

We also looked at the form of poetry called Haiku. Students then wrote their own to go with our Autumn leaf art activity we completed.

SOCIAL STUDIES- This week we started chapter 2, the rise of agriculture and civilizations. Students were taught how to look the non-fiction text to get important information. They learned a strategy where we looked at each sub category and made a question out of it. These were put onto note cards, along with new vocabulary that was introduced. Later, we will answer these questions and be able to use them as a tool for studying for the test later down the line.

LITTLE BUDDIES: Today we had a "Yummy" math lesson activity with our little buddies. Little buddies had to design and decorate a cookie using items they purchased with plastic money, and they then practiced how to count their change. The perk, big buddies were also able to make a Halloween cookie to eat.

GOLF TOURNAMENT: Thank you to all that participated and donated both their time and money to make a very successful school fundraiser.

That’s all for now!  Have a great weekend.
