Math Curriculum

We are using the Scott Foresman math program. This curriculum is standards based and it presents math concepts, sequentially, from kindergarten through sixth grade. There are nine academic components to our math program: Addition and Subtraction Strategies, Money, Time, Patterns and Numbers to 1,000, Measurement, Geometry (Plane and Solid Shapes), Fractions and Probability, Multiplication, and Division.

Listed below are basic concepts of the second grade math program.

USING ADDITION & SUBTRACTION STRATEGIES :
- Place value to 1,000
- Writing number sentences
- Using doubles
- Fact Families
- Regrouping
- Use of decimals
- MONEY :
- Counting coins and dollars
- Making change
- Word problems
- Use of dollar and cent signs
- Counting by five's, ten's, twenty five's, and fifty's
- TIME :
- Telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, and five minutes
- Difference between a.m. and p.m.
- Elapsed time
- Reading schedules
- Using a calendar
- PATTERNS & NUMBERS TO 1,000 :
- Cardinal and Ordinal numbers (i.e., first, second, etc.)
- Identifying three digit numbers that come before, between, and after other numbers
- Expanded notations (i.e., 300 + 40 + 5 = 345)
- Rounding to the nearest 100
- MEASUREMENT :
- Length and height in standard and non-standard (i.e., paper clips) units
- Measurement units: pounds, inches, feet, years, temperature, liters, centimeters, meters, grams, kilograms, cups, pints, quarts, gallons
- GEOMETRY – PLANE & SOLID SHAPES :
- Faces, vertices, edges, sides
- Congruent & symmetrical figures
- Slides, flips, turns (moving a shape in space)
- Perimeter
- Pictographs & Bar Graphs
- FRACTIONS AND PROBABILITY :
- Equal parts
- Fractions to fourths, eights, twelfths
- Fractions equal to One
- Recording data & making a table
- Probability
- MULTIPLICATION :
- Repeated addition
- Drawing pictures for understanding
- Multiplying in any order
- Multiplication by 2's, 5's, 10's (up to ten times)
- Multiple step problems
- DIVISION :
- As repeated subtraction; as equal sharing
- With remainders
- Relating multiplication and division
- Choosing the correct operation (-, +, x)
