Home/School Communications
Communication between home and school is highly important and plays a major role in the success of our school year. I can be reached in the following ways:
1. You may leave a note in your child's homework folder
2. You may call the office and leave a message during school at (909) 398-0305 and I will return your call as soon as possible.
3. My email: mchadwic@chsmail.claremont.edu *This is new for me this year, so I may not answer and check my email everyday. *Any information that needs to get to me immediately, call the office or write a note!!
Please know that I am here to work with you and to explore solutions that are in the best interest of your child's welfare and education. I will also be sending home a newsletter on a monthly basis letting you know what the current area of study is in our classroom and class events.

Behavior Expectation
Having fun in school is a great way to develop love for learning. I believe in having fun and encourage my students to explore, question, share, and enjoy themselves during class time. However, there is an appropriate time for interacting with others and there are rules that they must follow so that their idea of fun doesn't turn into silliness that wastes class time. I do expect my students to behave in a manner that is respectful of others and conducive to learning and any behaviors that interfere with the learning process will not be tolerated.
The rules are easy:
-
1. Be kind to yourself and others.
-
2. Follow directions.
-
3. Listen carefully.
-
4. Raise your hand to speak.
-
5. Complete and turn in all of your work.
-
6. Follow the school rules.
During the course of the day I will be using various forms of incentives to encourage and reward positive behaviors.

Birthday Celebrations
Birthdays are important to many children and they will be recognized on their special day if you wish. If you would like to bring in treats, please let me know and bring in healthy treats(no sugar please). I will give out treats after lunch. Party invitations should be mailed out or passed out after school to avoid any hurt feelings. If you are inviting the entire class, we can pass them out at school.

Restroom Policy
I encourage the students to use the restrooms during the following break periods: 9:45 - 10:00, 11:30 - 12:15, and 1:30-1:40. This helps eliminate class disruptions and missed assignments. I also allow the students one bathroom pass per day when there are emergencies.

Illness/Appointments/Punctuality
If your child is ill and can't come to school, please contact the school office 909-398-0305 and let our secretary know. Please do not send your child if he/she has a temperature over 100 or if they have vomited in the last 24 hours. Children who are sick have a difficult time focusing on their work and they expose other children to their illness.
If a child becomes sick at school, they will be sent to the nurses office where it will be determined if the child needs to be treated and sent back to class or it is necessary for them to go home.
If a child is scheduled for a doctor's appointment, please check your child in and out at the office. Do not come to the classroom to pick up your child.
Punctuality is also very important. School starts at 8:15 AM. A good rule of thumb is to have your child at school by 8:00 AM so that they can participate in the morning recess and get to class on time.

Homework
The Claremont Unified School District requires that we assign a maximum of 20-30 minutes of homework nightly for second grade. I will assign a weekly homework packet that will go home on Friday. I have outlined on the homework cover sheet how the homework should be done, however, I understand that life is busy and you may adjust the schedule to meet your needs. Each Friday a new packet will come home. Please turn in homework folders no later than Thursday. Each child is responsible for completing and turning in all of their homework and class work. If class work is not completed in class, students will be given Friday Free Time to finish it. Some assignments will be sent home if more time is needed. I quickly check homework but I do not grade it. Please check your child's work to be sure it is neat and correct. Homework should be returned with your child's name and stapled together or clipped.
Please let me know if your child is having a difficult time with the homework and I can work with you to make adjustments.
