Each fall, the upper grade classes at Chaparral work with the Scripps Foreign Language Program, directed by Thierry Boucquey. Professor Boucquey’s students work in pairs to teach each class a different foreign language for a period of about 10 weeks. In the past, my students have learned to communicate in Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Arabic. This fall, we learned Chinese! See some of our pictures here.

In the Spring, as the fifth graders learn about the Revolutionary War, we visit Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen, where the students experience what life was like in the 1700s. They also reenact one of the battles of the war as either British Redcoats or American colonists.

This is our chance to take some of the edge off the cost of Astrocamp tuition and give your child a good math activity at the same time. Please save old clothes and other possible treasures. Students are expected to work at least one two-hour shift between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Astrocamp is a three-day intensive space science experience in the mountains of Idyllwild. The students learn, among other things, how to make and launch bottle rockets, experience microgravity, and use super-powered telescopes to view stars and planets. Our field trip is scheduled for April 23-25.

Every year, Chaparral holds a track and field day in which 4th, 5th, and 6th graders participate in running events, the long jump, softball throw, soccer shootout, and an obstacle course. It’s an opportunity for all of us to enjoy the wonderful weather and celebrate teamwork and sportsmanship. It's usually held the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend. |
