English Language Arts (ELA): We work on basic skills in reading, inferencing, drawing conclusions, recognizing main ideas and comprehension. We work to enhance vocabulary development, as well as grammar in each theme. We emphasize topic sentences in writing with supporting details using the Four Square Writing approach. We teach research report writing and how to access the research needed. We also do oral assignments on many topics to get students talking in front of others and listening.
Mathematics: We work on number sense operations with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers fractions and decimals. We also use negative and positive integers as well. We dive into measurement and geometry as well as ratios proportions and percentages. Another bit area of study is in problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Social Studies: We study prehistoric groups such as Homo erectus and Cro-Magnon man, as well as ancient civilization like Greece, Egypt and Mesopotamia. We continue teaching map skills with these curricular topics.
Science: We study Life Science with our units on Ecosystems and animals/plants there. We do Physical Science with units on matter and the periodic table. We so study Earth Science with plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes. We work on teaching the Scientific method and we attend Science School.
Physical Education (PE): Students participate in a structured motor skills program three days per week Students are required to wear appropriate clothing (tennis shoes, pants or shorts) on their assigned P.E. days. All physical workouts will begin with age appropriate stretching exercises followed by a series of small and gross motor skills development activities in the following areas: fitness training, neurological efficiency training and sport skills
Art: Our students will have the opportunity to work with a qualified artist from the Art Masters Program. They will receive six lessons during the course of the school year. The lessons will involve learning about various artists and the different techniques used by each one of these artists. Each lesson begins with a history lesson about the artist and will culminate into an art activity that allows each child to create his or her own masterpiece using different mediums and utilizing the various styles and techniques of the artist they are learning about. |
