English Language Arts (ELA):  We are using the Houghton Mifflin Reading/Language Arts program and the Four Square Writing program.  Houghton Mifflin is a standards based literacy program, broken up into six story themes.  We have two literature anthologies and supplemental reading materials.  There are four academic components:  Reading Word Work, Writing and Language, and Cross-curricular.  Each one of theses components is divided into skill areas.

Mathematics:  We are using the Scott Foresman math program.  This curriculum is standards based and it presents sequential math concepts.  We also apply teaching strategies fro the Cal Poly CMAST institute, headed by Dr. Judy Jacobs.  There are nine academic components to our math program.  Addition and subtraction strategies, money, time patterns and numbers to 1,000, measurement, geometry, fractions and probability, multiplication and division.

Social Studies:  We are currently using the Houghton Mifflin textbook that covers these four areas of study:  Depending on Others, Knowing your family, Living in Our Country and People Who Have Made a Difference.  In social studies, we focus on how people affect the world we live in and how each of us directly or indirectly contributes to it.

Science:  Through the generous donation of the PFA, we were able to purchase a standards based science curriculum.  As a staff, we chose the Houghton Mifflin Science Discovery Works.  Along with introducing the scientific method on inquiry, we cover five scientific subject areas:  Life cycles, What Makes Me Sick, Energy and Motion, Earth’s Materials, and Electricity and Magnetism.

Physical Education (PE)  Students participate in a structured motor skills program three days per week Students are required to wear appropriate clothing (tennis shoes, pants or shorts) on their assigned P.E. days.  All physical workouts will begin with age appropriate stretching exercises followed by a series of small and gross motor skills development activities in the following areas:  fitness training, neurological efficiency training and sport skills

Art:  Our children will have the opportunity to work with a qualified artist from the Art Masters Program.  They will receive six lessons during the course of the school year.  The lessons will involve learning about various artists and the different techniques used by each one of these artists.  Each lesson begins with a history lesson about the artist and will culminate into an art activity that allows each child to create his or her own masterpiece using different mediums and utilizing the various styles and techniques of the artist they are learning about.
